We have ALL heard the horror stories. Perhaps you know someone personally who has suffered terrible hardships due to the unfortunate theft of their personal information. Bank accounts drained of every last penny, thousands of dollars worth of merchandise charged to their credit cards and worst of all, the emotional torture. "Who did this?" "Why me?" "I'm ruined!!! "One minute they were living comfortably, enjoying the daily routine (although mundane!) and the next minute their world turned upside down! Imagine having this type of thing happen to you! If they have your account numbers, it is safe to assume that they know where you live, what kind of car you drive,if you are married, single, how many children you have, your social security number.....
Frightening, isn't it? Faceless information pirates preying on the trustworthy. They go through our trash, our mail and of course they cruise the net searching for unsuspecting victim's.If only that were all there was to worry about.....The biggest problem? Let's look at a VERY plausible scenario: You are shopping for a new Plasma TV. The teenage salesman informs you that for a limited time, the store will finance your purchase at 0% interest provided you don't already have credit with them. Sounds good, so you fill out the application and hand it back. Approved!! You leave with a new TV, and he leaves with ALL of your personal information. He "forgot" to shred that application. Outside in the parking lot he hands it over, along with three others, to an older guy in a BMW. The teenager leaves work $80.00 richer, and your information is soon on it's way via email to a house in Brownsville, Texas. Soon after, a visitor arrives at the house with a large backpack, and that guy leaves rather quickly (without the backpack) carrying a CD loaded with personal information, yours included. A few hours later at a remote area near the Mexican border, he hands out incredibly "real" false documents to everyone who comes across with enough money to pay for them. Get the picture? This is the "microwave" generation, and things like this do happen, and they happen before you can get your new Plasma TV up and running! That, in my opinion, is the most important reason for ANYONE to monitor their credit. There are terrorists out there who don't like Americans, and they will pay thousands of dollars to get their hands on YOUR personal information so they can come and go as they please!
